Question: What is Vegetarian Diet?

Answer:

A lot of variants and sub variants of the vegetarian diet. The two classic variants are

  1. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian- simply avoid meat, poultry and fish. They eat no meat but will consume animal products such as milk, cheese and eggs.
  2. Strict vegetarian or Vegan diet- excludes all animal products, limiting the diet to only those foods produced in the plant kingdom.

Vegetarian diet can take several forms and the degree of adherence to the dietary pattern may vary greatly among individuals. There are a number of dietary, religious, and moral considerations which may lead individuals to limit or modify the vegetarian diet. The categories listed below are just few forms of the vegetarian diet. The definitions below are not necessarily “official” or exclusive terms but are used to help describe types of food groups typically included or excluded. Some individuals may be “casual” vegetarians in that they may only occasionally restrict specific types of meat; some persons may limit their diet far more than the most strict category described below. If there is concern about nutritional adequacy, it is very appropriate to inquire into actual dietary practices, the degree to which they are followed, and the duration of the dietary patterns.

  • Vegan- strict vegetarian. Includes fruits, vegetables, grain, nuts, and legumes
  • Lacto-ovo-vegetarian- includes fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and legumes, milk and milk products, eggs (may also be just lacto or ovo)
  • Pesco vegetarian- includes fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and legumes, milk and milk products, eggs, and fish
  • Semi or Pseudo vegetarian- includes fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and legumes, milk and milk products, eggs, fish (usually), and poultry. This is basically a “no red meat” diet and is currently trendy

    wants to get started on the new diet but can not do much until the new year when we get the cross trainer, i will eb fit and healthy again..
