Answer:

Splenectomy predisposes patients to sepsis by encapsulated organisms, including:

  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Neisseria meningitidis
  • Escherichia coli
  • Occasional cases due to S. aureus and Capnocytophaga canimorsus (DF-2) have been described.
