Question: How safe is the use of medicinal herbs?

The primary problem with medicinal herbal products is the lack of regulation. These products do not fall under the purview of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Manufacturers of herbal preparations are not required to show safety or efficacy before marketing. The products are not regulated for quality, with respect to dosage, potency, or purity. Despite this, the FDA categorizes about 250 herbs as “generally recognized as safe” for consumption based on long-term or widespread use without significant side effects.
